Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire: My Review

Pure monster mayhem that embraces its inner Saturday morning cartoon

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the most unapologetically fun film in the MonsterVerse, and honestly, it’s exactly what I wanted. This isn’t trying to be deep or philosophical about the nature of giant monsters. It knows you’re here to watch massive Titans punch each other, and it delivers that experience with pure joy.

The storytelling is refreshingly straightforward. Kong is living in Hollow Earth, dealing with loneliness and searching for others of his kind. Godzilla is on the surface, doing his thing, keeping balance in the Titan world. When a new threat emerges from the depths in the form of the Skar King, an ancient tyrannical ape who once tried to conquer the surface world, our two alpha Titans must team up. No convoluted conspiracy plots, no boring human schemes taking up half the runtime, just monsters with problems that require monster solutions.

What really works here is the tone. Director Adam Wingard fully commits to making this a colorful, energetic spectacle that feels like classic monster movies mixed with pro wrestling. There’s genuine humor in watching Kong get fitted with a mechanical glove like he’s getting a superhero upgrade. Godzilla charging up by absorbing cosmic radiation that turns his dorsal plates magenta is wonderfully absurd and the movie knows it. This isn’t realistic or grounded, and it’s better for embracing that.

The human characters take a backseat, which is the right choice. They’re there to move the plot forward and provide emotional context, particularly through Jia’s connection to Kong and her role in awakening Mothra, but the film never pretends you care more about them than the Titans. The focus stays where it should be, on the monsters.

Visually, this is a feast. Hollow Earth is gorgeously realized with vibrant colors and imaginative creature designs. The action sequences are clear and exciting, never devolving into the murky chaos that plagued earlier films. You can actually see what’s happening, which seems basic but makes all the difference.

My Rating: 7.5/10

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire understands exactly what it is and delivers that experience with confidence and joy. It’s big, loud, colorful, and completely entertaining. The storytelling is simple but effective, the tone is playful without being stupid, and most importantly, it respects your time by focusing on what you came to see: giant monsters being awesome.

Perfect for: Monster movie fans, anyone who loved the previous films, viewers who want pure spectacle without heavy drama, people who think movies should be fun first and foremost, families looking for action-packed entertainment.

Bottom line: This is crowd-pleasing blockbuster filmmaking done right. It knows its audience and gives them exactly what they want without apology. The MonsterVerse has found its sweet spot by leaning into the joy and spectacle of giant monster battles while keeping the human drama minimal and the pacing tight. If you want to see Kong get a robot arm and team up with Godzilla to fight an evil ape king and his ice-breathing enslaved Titan, this movie has you covered. Sometimes that’s all you need.
