A surprisingly fun holiday action adventure that delivers pure entertainment
As a Dwayne Johnson fan, I knew I was watching Red One no matter what. The Rock could be in a movie about organizing spreadsheets and I’d still show up. But this film genuinely exceeded my expectations. I went in thinking it might be another generic holiday cash grab, and instead I got a genuinely fun, creative action adventure that I’d absolutely watch again.
The concept alone hooked me: Santa Claus gets kidnapped, and the North Pole’s head of security has to team up with a hacker to save Christmas. But it’s not just that simple. The movie builds this whole mythological world where Santa is protected by MORA, the Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority, a secret organization that maintains peace between humans and mythological creatures. It’s like the MCU meets Christmas, and honestly, it works.
Dwayne Johnson plays Callum Drift, Santa’s bodyguard who’s planning to retire because he’s lost faith in humanity. The Naughty List keeps getting longer, and he’s just tired of seeing people behave badly. On what’s supposed to be his last Christmas run, Santa, code-named Red One and played by a jacked J.K. Simmons, gets kidnapped by a mysterious black ops team.
Chris Evans plays Jack O’Malley, a hacker and tracker who unknowingly sold Santa’s location to the kidnappers. He’s a deadbeat dad, always on the Naughty List, and a complete skeptic who doesn’t believe in Santa or magic. When MORA brings him in, led by Lucy Liu’s Zoe Harlow, Jack is forced to help Callum find Santa before Christmas is ruined forever.
The casting is absolutely perfect. Dwayne Johnson brings his signature charm and physicality to Callum. He’s tough but has this underlying warmth that makes you believe he genuinely cares about protecting Santa and the spirit of Christmas. Chris Evans is hilarious as the cynical, sarcastic Jack. Watching these two polar opposites team up and bicker their way through the mission is genuinely entertaining. Their chemistry carries the film.
J.K. Simmons as a buff, cookie-loving Santa is inspired casting. He’s not your typical jolly old man; he’s fit, takes the job seriously, and has real emotional depth. Kiernan Shipka plays the villain Grýla, a winter witch who thinks Santa has gone soft and wants to imprison everyone on the Naughty List in magical snow globes. She brings genuine menace to the role.
What really impressed me is the worldbuilding. This isn’t just a Christmas movie; it’s setting up an entire universe of mythological beings living secretly among us. The North Pole is depicted as this high-tech operation with security protocols, air force escorts, and a massive distribution system. The attention to detail in how they reimagine Santa’s operation for a modern action movie is really creative.
The action sequences are genuinely exciting. There’s a fight with snowman henchmen that’s both intense and fun. The reindeer can hyperspace travel like they’re in Star Wars. There are globe-trotting missions to Aruba and beyond as they track down leads on who took Santa. The special effects are top-notch, and director Jake Kasdan keeps everything moving at a great pace.
The storytelling works really well for me. It balances the action with genuine heart. Jack’s arc from cynical non-believer to someone who rediscovers the magic of Christmas and becomes a better father to his son Dylan is predictable but earned. Callum’s journey back to believing in the goodness of people gives the film emotional weight beyond just punching bad guys.
The direction by Jake Kasdan, who did the recent Jumanji movies, is spot-on. He knows how to blend comedy, action, and heart in a way that appeals to everyone. The movie never takes itself too seriously, but it also treats the stakes with enough respect that you care about whether they save Santa.
I loved how inventive the mythology is. The way they incorporate different folklore creatures, the rules about how magic works, the distinction between being good versus being nice, it all adds layers to what could have been a simple kidnapping plot. The film doesn’t just throw CGI at you; it uses the fantasy elements to tell a story about redemption and believing in something bigger than yourself.
The humor lands throughout. Evans and Johnson play off each other perfectly, with Evans bringing the sarcasm and Johnson delivering the straight-man reactions. There are running gags about milk and cookies, jokes about the Naughty List, and clever references to Christmas traditions that made me laugh.
Is it a perfect film? No. The runtime is a bit long at over two hours. Some of the CGI, while impressive, can look a bit video-gamey in spots. And if you’re looking for deep, meaningful cinema, this isn’t it. But as pure entertainment that the whole family can enjoy, it absolutely delivers.

The cast is fantastic, the direction is confident, the storytelling balances action and heart perfectly, and the concept is inventive enough to stand out. I would absolutely watch it again.

Dwayne Johnson proves once again why he’s one of the biggest stars in the world. His chemistry with Chris Evans is fantastic, and watching them banter while saving Christmas is pure joy. The worldbuilding opens up possibilities for sequels or expanded stories in this mythology, and I’d be first in line to watch them. This is the kind of movie that reminds you why you love going to the cinema: big, fun, spectacular entertainment that makes you smile.
