The Alchemist – Honest Book Review

After reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I’m sitting here with that feeling you get when a story is simple on the outside but leaves you thinking about… well, everything.

It’s this beautiful, almost magical story about a shepherd boy from Spain named Santiago. He has this recurring dream about finding a treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. Most people would just shrug it off, right? But Santiago is brave (or maybe crazy) enough to do the unthinkable: he sells his sheep and leaves his entire life behind to go find it.

The book is all about his journey. He crosses the desert, meets all kinds of different people – an old king, a crystal merchant who is afraid to follow his own dreams, and eventually, the alchemist himself.

But the treasure is almost not the point. The real heart of the story is this idea of your “Personal Legend” (which is basically your true purpose in life) and how, if you really want something, “all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” That line is going to stick with me.

It’s a book about listening to your heart, paying attention to the “omens” (or signs) the world gives you, and just having the courage to follow your path, even when it’s scary or you have setbacks.

It’s written so simply, almost like a fable or a fairy tale, but the ideas in it are incredibly deep. It made me feel really hopeful and, honestly, it made me look at my own life and ask, “Am I listening to my heart? Am I putting off any of my own dreams?”

And here’s my “nice touch” from it, the little idea I’m taking with me: I want to try and pay more attention to the small, good things that happen during the day. The book calls them omens, but maybe it’s just finding a great parking spot, or running into an old friend, or hearing the perfect song on the Spotify. The book made me want to see those things as little nudges from the universe, tiny bits of magic telling me I’m on the right track.

It’s a very quick read, but it’s one of those books that feels bigger than it looks. If you’re feeling a bit stuck, or you’re at a crossroads in your life, I’d totally recommend it. It’s like a warm, wise friend giving you a little pep talk.
